Business Climate Challenge.

Leading online pension provider, PensionBee, announces its participation in the Mayor of London’s Business Climate Challenge (BCC) to aid London’s target of becoming a zero carbon city by 2030.

PensionBee is one of 40 businesses located on the southern bank of the River Thames pledging to reduce their building’s energy consumption by at least 10% over the next year. The voluntary efficiency programme, facilitated by Better Bankside, an organisation established to improve the experience of the neighbourhood, has been developed to support businesses in reducing their carbon footprint, with the overarching aim of reducing the emissions of London’s existing commercial buildings.

Buildings will undergo an energy efficiency audit, reviewing factors such as lighting and ventilation, with the results being used to develop a route map towards net-zero emissions. This will help future-proof businesses against rising energy prices and inform the process for other buildings with similar characteristics.

Findings from the BCC pilot indicate that in the first round of the programme, participants reduced their energy consumption by 16% on average (1).

Clare Reilly, Chief Engagement Officer of PensionBee, commented: “Participating in the Mayor’s Business Climate Challenge was an obvious choice for us as PensionBee is committed to minimising our impact on the environment, while using our influence to build a better future for both our society and the planet. We’re thrilled to be able to join other leading London-based businesses to accelerate an important change in workplace energy consumption and carbon emissions.”

Shirley Rodrigues, Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy, commented: “London’s businesses have a key role to play in the fight against climate change, and programmes like the Business Climate Challenge are a crucial way the public and private sector can work together. Business Climate Challenge participants are leading the way in supporting the city’s net-zero by 2030 goal by accelerating action to reduce their workplace carbon emissions.”
